What do we mean by equality?

Equality is not always about treating everyone the in the TU team exactly the same – it is about treating our people in such a way that the outcome for each team member can be the same. For us, this means putting in place systems to support people in achieving similar and equitable outcomes.

Equality of outcomes in the TU means that as a team, we make sure that everyone is supported and has access to resources, decision making, recognition and opportunities. Ensuring that equality is embedded as a golden thread within our organisation helps to promote a culture of both value and of respect.

What do we mean by diversity?

Diversity is about what makes each of us in the TU who we are.
It is a combination of our team’s differences that shape our view of the world, our perspective and our approach. Diversity is also about recognising, respecting, celebrating and valuing differences based on ethnicity, gender, age, race, religion, disability and sexual orientation.

It also includes an infinite range of our team’s individual unique characteristics, cultural background, traits and experiences, such as communication style, neurodiversity (including brain function and behavioural traits), career path, lived experience, educational background, geographic location, income level, marital status, parental status and other variables that influence personal perspectives and interpretations.

What do we mean by inclusion?

Inclusion is about ensuring people in our team feel, and are, valued, included and respected. This is regardless of their personal characteristic or circumstances. Our team members should:

  • have the opportunity to fulfil their individual and combined potential
  • have access to opportunities and resources
  • be able to contribute their personal best in every encounter
  • be able to contribute their perspectives and talents to improve our organisation
  • be able to bring far more of themselves to their jobs
  • have a sense of belonging in the TU.

Our EDI Strategy

We have a TU Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. The implementation of this is being  led by our TU EDI Working Group, made up of a wide range of voices from throughout our team. Four pillars of work make up our strategy and translate our EDI commitments into direct action. These are:

TU Celebrates – Celebrating our staff, clients and communities by promoting key events, festivals and moments from a diverse range of cultures and faiths.

TU Recruits – Our approach to recruiting a diverse team by ensuring accessible, fair and equitable recruitment processes and talent acquisition.

TU Learns – Ensuring we continue to learn and grow through our EDI-based learning, development and training opportunities for our people.

TU Offers – Promotion and expansion of our EDI-related offers available to our current and prospective clients and other external stakeholders.
